JUN 2014 — The Marpole Business Improvement Association is pleased to welcome everyone to the 14th Annual Marpole Summerfest event on Saturday, July 12th, from 11 AM to 3 PM along Granville St. in the Marpole commercial district.

Marpole Summerfest is a free, family-oriented community celebration held along Granville Street (between 63rd and 71st Avenues) in the Marpole commercial district. From 11 AM to 3 PM, Granville Street will be alive with fantastic merchant
sidewalk sales, special promotions and local restaurants offering tastes of the many ethnic foods & specialties available in the neighbourhood.

The wide variety of lively children's and family-oriented entertainment at this year's Summerfest includes the local band Cocktail PIlots, the Sand Northrup One Woman Circus, Sylvia the Balloon Artiste, Magic Shows, Whistles the Clown, Ragtime Ron & the Riverboat Ramblers, Noah Nine and the Rainbow Facepainters.

There will also be a Kids Zone, complete with rides, games and the Marpole Library Puppet Show, located on 67th Avenue. The ninth annual Show & Shine event returns to the Petro Canada parking lot, showcasing loads of classic cars in all their shining glory.

We'll be celebrating the 40th Birthday of our Marpole Branch Library with a cake cutting ceremony, and the Giggle Photo Booth will allow everyone's silly side to shine through with photo takeaways.

Local community groups will also be on hand for the event, including; BC Hydro Power Smart, YVR Airport, and the Marpole-Oakridge Community Policing Centre.

There is something for everyone at the 14th Annual Marpole Summerfest event.

The Thirteenth Annual Marpole Summerfest event will take place on Saturday, July 13th, from 11 AM to 3 PM, along Granville Street between 63rd and 71st Avenues.

Sidewalk sales and merchant promotions, musicians and balloon artists, face painters and juggling shows, on-street chalk murals, and a classic car Show 'n Shine - all of this adds up to a fun-filled, family-oriented community celebration!

Merchants who have taken advantage of the Association's sponsorship and coordination of this event in the past have increased both their sales and customer counts.

For many participating merchants, Marpole Summerfest has become one of the busiest sales days of the entire year.

No matter what kind of business you run or service you provide, you CAN participate in Summerfest and market your business to the community.

1. Designate 1 key item as your "Summerfest Special" - to bring people into your business.
This can be a food item, a product or special service that your business provides.

If you are in the food service business, please have your set-up complete and food ready to eat by 11 AM. People arrive hungry!

2. Advertise your "Summerfest Special" in the Vancouver Courier.

Spread the word beyond your store and into the homes of Vancouver's west side neighbourhoods. We will publish the Summerfest event schedule in the Courier newspaper, and online.

3. Print or copy flyers to put inside customer shopping bags in the weeks prior to July 13th.

Advertise the specials you intend to offer to your customers for Summerfest; maybe even include a coupon to reward them for their patronage - to be used after July 13th.

4. Take it to the street! Set up a table in front of your store with sale merchandise and/or product or food samples.

The key to your success with Marpole Summerfest is PARTICIPATION. The MBA office would be more than happy to help you find your key to success.

Summerfest Entertainment - A great day for all ages

JUN 2013 — There will be a wide variety of fun, family-oriented entertainment at this year's 13th Annual Summerfest event.

There will be two locations for the Rainbow Facepainters this year, and Juggler Sand Northrup, Sylvia Mathies 'balloon artist extraordinaire', and musician Rachel Chatoor, will add their talents to the festivities as they rove along Granville Street.

Returning this year will be the Marpole Musical stage on 67th Avenue, featuring local faves the 323's and other talented acts; and the KidsZone Fun Fair, featuring a temporary tatto tent, games, and community booths from the City of Vancouver, YVR Airport, BC Hydro, and the Marpole Community Policing Office.

Many talented musical acts will also be present to liven up the atmosphere along Granville Street. These include jazz musicians the Doe Bender Trio, rock n' roll duo Noah Nine, the Ray Myers Band, and Ragtime Ron and the Riverboat Ramblers.

New this year! The 'My Marpole Story' short story competition. Submissions must be more than four sentences, and shorter than 150 words, and must describe a personal story or experience that involves Marpole. Stories can be dropped off at the Marpole Library until July 5th, and then will be judged by a literary panel of local Marpolians. Tops prizes include an iPad Mini!

This year marks the return & expansion of the very popular classic car Show & Shine for its eighth year. The Show & Shine will be located at the Petro Canada parking lot and along 65th Avenue.
As part of the chART public art marpole project, Emily Carr University students will be hosting a variety of interactive activities on the former ESSO lot, south of 70th Avenue, including an evening Marpole Imagined slideshow. (Marpole Imagined was a collaborative project with Churchill High School Photography students.)

Many talented musical acts will also be present to liven up the atmosphere along Granville Street. These include jazz musicians the Doe Bender Trio, rock n' roll duo Noah Nine, the Ray Myers Band, and Ragtime Ron and the Riverboat Ramblers.

This year marks the return of the very popular classic car Show & Shine for its seventh year. Due to Safeway's redevelopment, the Show & Shine will be located at the Petro Canada parking lot this year, just north of HSBC.

As part of the chArt Marpole Public Art project, Emily Carr University illustration students will be chalking up a storm on 66th Avenue as we sketch out a VIVA Vancouver permanent on-street mural design. Community residents & kids are invited to participate, as well as critique the chalk art designs.

"Ode to Marpole" Poetry Contest

JUN 2010 — In honour of the 10th Annual Marpole Summerfest event, the Marpole Business Association is pleased to present the "Ode to Marpole" Poetry Contest.

Let your creative spirit sing through poetry and the written word - extol the virtues of one of Vancouver’s oldest & original neighbourhoods — Marpole.

Grand Prize is $300 in gift certificates from members of the Marpole Business Association, a chance to perform your poem in public at the 10th Annual Marpole Summerfest event (Saturday, July 10th), and of course, bragging rights! There will also be prizes awarded for Best Children’s (3-12 years), Best Haiku and Best Rhyming Poems.

The judging panel will be comprised of three local Marpole representatives, including a representative from Historic Joy Kogawa House.

Submission Deadline: Wednesday, June 30, 2010.

Pick up and submit your poetry contest entry form at Characters Books & Coffee Bar, or the Marpole Branch Library. Or simply download the contest form (PDF). You may also email your poem to marpolebia@marpoleonline.com.

Rules & Regulations

You do not need to be a resident of Marpole to submit a poem. The subject must include a reference to the Marpole community, whether in past or present. All forms and styles of poetry will be considered. Limit of 3 written poetry entries per individual. The judges’ decisions are final. The Marpole BIA reserves the right to publish submitted poems online and in communications material.
