Private elementary school pulls together to help the less fortunate
MAR 24, 2014 — St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School, a K to 7 elementary school located in Marpole, enrolls 180 or so children who have pulled together through various school outreach projects over the course of the school year to help the less fortunate in our local and global communities.
Principal, Oscar Pozzolo, says "you will find a safe and nurturing environment that empowers children to help those less fortunate than themselves."
One of the activities is "Blessings in a Box" where students collect donations such as: deodorant, disposable razors, shaving cream, bars of soap, combs, men's socks, underwear, gloves, scarves, toques. These items are delivered to and distributed by the Catholic Charities Men's Hostel and given to the homeless of the Vancouver Eastside.
The school also supports the "Agape Street Ministry of Vancouver" by collecting candy donated from children's "trick or treating" on Halloween. Candy donations are collected and assembled into small bags with 10 pieces of candy and a special prayer card with key phone numbers such as local detox and Sancta Maria House. The candy bags are a means to engage in conversation with women where Agape volunteers will offer words of hope, prayer and guidance.
Students also participate in "Tale of the Tape", a food bank drive to support local community families in need. This year, students brought in over 615 kgs of non-perishable food items. The school's generosity continued with the delivery of 9 (cubic meter square) boxes that were filled with a variety of provisions and sent to the Philippines in response to the devastating impact from Typhoon Haiyan.
"Students at St. Anthony of Padua School are thankful for the opportunities to support others, and are encouraged to grow their ability to help those who are less fortunate than they are. This generosity and support helps our children to understand what the act of giving is all about." says Pozzolo.
