Metro TheatreCommunity theatre collecting for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank

DEC 23, 2013 — Metro Theatre is holding a food drive for the duration of its pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. Local firefighters came by Friday evening to make a mid-drive pick-up. Much to the delight of the young (and young-at-heart) audience members, the pantomime cast members interacted with the four firefighters from Vancouver Fire Hall No. 22. Metro Theatre had donated seats to two performances to kids in the Strathcona neighbourhood, and Friday night was the second of these two performances. Lynch Bus Lines generously offered bus transportation at half-price; and a grant from TELUS paid for the remaining cost. You can drop off non-perishable food items for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank at the theatre until January 4, 2014. [READ MORE]

Vancouver CourierRidge theatre's stained glass windows shattered: Saving the windows deemed too costly

OCT 09, 2013 — Stained glass windows destined for a Cineplex at Marine Gateway in Marpole couldn't be saved because they didn't fit the new theatre's design, said the Ridge's former owner. "I look at places like Seattle where in one block you can find a building from the '40s, '50s, '70s, '80s, and say, 2010, and they make it work," said David Chapman. "Look at Montreal. Montreal is one of the most beautiful cities because they save part of their history, even if it means they're going to modify it." Donald Luxton, president of the board of Heritage Vancouver, says the city needs to pay more attention to preserving heritage and cultural space. [READ MORE]

Vancouver CourierMarpole residents pan draft community plan

June 27, 2013 — Dozens of yellow sticky notes plastered on the draft Marpole Community Plan open house display boards Wednesday evening revealed the position and mood of the crowd:

  • Wrong area to rezone to townhouses.
  • Developers will love and benefit from your plans. Screw the homeowners. Progress is needed, but ruining Cambie is enough.
  • Firmly against Marpole rezoning. We don't need anymore high density, which cause unsafe environment. We love our community.
  • Increase density equals increase crime.
  • Why are you doing this to my family?
  • Who is benefited from such a stupid plan? Do away with him The Mayor.
  • This urban plan will destroy our beautiful neighbourhood.
  • Why are you doing this? Rezoning the entire neighbourhood like this is crazy.

JUN 2013 — The Urban Development Institute (UDI) is pleased with several directions in the Marpole Community Plan, including: the plan recognizes and allows for the area to grow by 50% over the next 30 years; the building forms, including heights, are clear; there is variety of housing types proposed; the plan recognizes the need and opportunity of high density buildings adjacent to the Marine Drive SkyTrain Station. UDI believes that there are even more opportunities for housing and job space in certain areas of the Plan, including: exploring opportunities to better utilize the improved East/West transportation corridors to create additional housing and employment opportunities along them; the high density corridor along Cambie Street between the stations at 57th and Marine Drive offers more capacity for height, and could be widened to allow for more housing. Vancouver MagazineMarpole: The staid streets of this South Vancouver neighbourhood take on the first hints of urbanity

MAY 2013 — "The glories of Marpole are not much bandied about by those who don't live there; to most, the nail salons and gas pumps that gird Granville Street at the city's southern extreme are familiar only because of the string of stoplights one idles at while driving to the airport. A recent tour, though, unearthed signs of change. At Characters, the used bookshop, Eleanor reports that "We had to put a lock on the bathroom door because of all the junkies shooting up in there. It was never like that a couple years ago." Urban signifiers (be they junkies or yuppies) are certainly scouting outward from the downtown core in concentric circles. At 65th, a branch of the townie favourite Bean Around the World has sprouted, and gay couples now share the New York Times with fleece-ensconced grandmothers native to the hood. If Marpole was meant to replace Surrey as the hinterland you don't want to come from, it's unlikely to be a joke target for long. A 20-minute bus ride connects this clutch of stucco walk-ups and Vancouver Specials with the city's high-rise heart." - originally published Mar 1, 2009 by Pat Richardson, Vancouver Magazine.

MAY 2013 — Milltown Marina is a joint partnership between the Musqueam Band and Bastion Development. They will be leasing Richmond Island from Port Metro Vancouver for the next 60 years, offering in-water slips and moorage, drystack storage, on-site repair and maintenance services, and a restaurant with patio. As part of habitat restoration, a new bird and wildlife habitat islet has been created at the mouth of Eburne Slough, which was dredged to allow for the marina's development. The Marina will be open and accessible to the public from Bentley Street, via car and pedestrian/cycle path. The Marpole BIA and members of the community worked with Marina Director Matthew Cote and the City of Vancouver on the public access and picnic area on the Marina site. Milltown Marina is scheduled to open in late summer 2013. [READ MORE]

Vancouver CourierProposed facility at historic Casa Mia worries homeowners

APR 2013 — Southlands homeowners don't want a care facility for seniors in their neighbourhood. They're afraid locating the facility at the historic Casa Mia estate would create a potential influx of traffic that would add to already busy streets. The residents believe such a facility would better suit Granville, Cambie or Oak streets, which have commercial zones, transit options and coffee shops. The city has identified Casa Mia for its significant heritage value but that doesn't guarantee protection from demolition or alteration. [READ MORE]

Vancouver CourierSFU students design social media plan to help isolated Marpole seniors

MAR 2013 — A group of business students has created a social media plan to reduce the isolation of seniors living alone in Marpole. Last week, the students designed a "web" of coloured yarn in front of Marpole library on Granville Street near 70th Avenue, to symbolize both physical community connections and the Internet's interconnected web. Some think that social media is so fast paced that it's only suited for a younger generation, but SFU business student Joanna Kipp says no one is too old to learn the online world. Matt Shillito, assistant director of community planning, said "We're interested in people's thoughts around transit service and walking and cycling infrastructure, in particular areas of the community where we could do a better job of traffic calming." Staff also has ideas about additional bus service such as working with TransLink to get a bus link on West 70th Avenue between Granville Street and the Canada Line. Vancouver CourierMarpole shipyard building quietly demolished

FEB 2013 — Earlier this month, Terry Slack, a fisherman for 65 years, was walking by the Fraser River waterfront near the corner of Hudson Street and West 77th Avenue when he noticed a two-storey wooden building that had once been used to repair ships, one that he had seen for decades, was missing. Although dating from about 1910, the building had not been placed on city hall's heritage preservation list since the list was created in the mid-1980s. The landowners, Canfor Corporation forestry giant, had applied for a demolition permit last fall which the city issued. "I'm concerned we've lost a lot of history in Marpole and the riverfront," said Slack. "The building should have at least been photographed by the city, and artifacts preserved." Slack and Claudia Laroye, director of the Marpole Business Association, believed the area was excluded from the Marpole planning process. [READ ARTICLE]

Marine GatewayExcavation company digs deep to bring in new village

JAN 2013 — Excavation at Marpole's massive, mixed-use Marine Gateway development is reaching towards completion as Matcon Excavation & Shoring Ltd. is digging deep to bring in one of Vancouver's newest village areas. The scale of the excavation for the development, sited at where southwest Marine Drive crosses Cambie Street and next door to the Marine Drive Canada Line station, is only surpassed by the work Matcon performed at the 2010 Winter Olympic Village in False Creek. Excavation, which started in July 2012, is slated for completion by March 2013. Two twin residential towers, where all units pre-sold quickly, will mark the development. The North Tower will have 38 storeys and 234 suites completing in November 2014, while the South Tower with 29 levels and 180 suites completes in January 2015. A smaller, third tower measuring 14 storeys (plus a podium) will contain mainly office and commercial space. The complex retail outlets will include a T&T grocery store, coffee shops and banks plus an 11-screen movie theatre on-site. In total, the development will offer 820,000 square feet of residential condo, rental housing, office, retail and public space. [DOWNLOAD PDF]

Vancouver CourierHomeless man's death does not go unnoticed: Marpole fixture remembered fondly

JAN 2013 — Rick Hofs probably didn't want his life to end this way: alone and curled up in his sleeping gear outside the back door of a Marpole dollar store.
