Marpole BIAPrepare for city's Zero Waste Initiative

DEC 2012 — If you have a cafe, restaurant, or food service business, you may have heard by now of the City's and Metro Vancouver's Zero Waste Initiative. By 2015, there will be a BAN on organic materials going into bins, garbage containers, or the landfill. By 2015, all organic waste (including food scraps) will have to be composted or diverted from the landfill. The City of Vancouver (as well as other municipalities) will be putting bylaws into place to ensure compliance with this zero waste initiative. It is important to begin planning NOW on how your business can divert its organic materials, either through composting or recycling. Start by conducting a Waste Audit. Measure how much organic waste you produce today, and how you can reduce it over the next two years. Talk to your current waste provider about what
services they have, or will have, available for food composting and pick up. Determine a budget, as well as a location for where food waste bins can be stored. Check out Bokashi: for no-odour, natural composting that is DIY and affordable. If you need help or advice, call 604-418-8232.

The city is also looking to create a mini-park along the south end of Shaughnessy Street, which would extend Shaughnessy Park, located on the Fraser waterfront. [READ ARTICLE]

PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE: A Seated Place Where Worlds Collide

Saturday, June 16th, 11-3pm
Location: The Benches of Granville Street in Marpole at 68th and Granville
Day 2 -- We live in the information age, but often we don't really get a chance to share other ways of thinking or other points of view. This drop-in experience offers you a chance to sit and have direct discussions with a city councillor, a Musqueam band member, a city planner, the president of the Marpole BIA, a local historian, and many more Marpole community members. Conversations go both ways - have your voice heard too! Join us on the benches, where worlds come together and you can visit the past, present and future of the area by sitting for a short time (or a long one!) and finding out about the different worlds that exist in Marpole.

traffic? Love the dogs in your neighborhood? Annoyed at the cost of living? Want more pancakes in your
life? Or are you just passionate? Come on down and get it all off your chest in this seriously fun rally for all. Visitors are encouraged to make a sign and take a stand.
