Using the City of Vancouver's 311 System
DEC 2010 — Have you ever called 311? Have you even heard of this City of Vancouver information service? 311 is a multi-lingual, 24/7 service line to help citizens - like you - connect with their local government. The City’s 311 service was launched in 2009, and the system is modelled on the popular 311 services in New York, Toronto and Calgary. Through 311, you can ask questions about any city service, report issues of concern to city staff, and be connected to the relevant city department based on your inquiry. Many popular call topics are questions about garbage service, reports of garbage dumping, reporting graffiti vandalism, and community centre inquiries. As a business person, you can call 311 to connect to the City’s licensing and permit departments, report on non-emergency safety concerns, or to report if someone has dumped a mattress in the lane behind your building. If you don’t know who to turn to, the operators at 311 can help determine the correct City department to answer your inquiry or concern. It’s a great resource, and of course, always easy to remember.
